Co-Founder of HeartWire.org // Institute for embodied learning technologies

HeartWire looks into the potentials of Virtual Reality, biofeedback and other technologies in educational settings. We suppose that, used wisely and with measure, transcendence tech can enable us to experience "peak-states of consciousness" that could (permanently?) change the way we think and feel about the world.

Dis-Cover the Soul of Science: How Virtual Reality could change the Way we understand the World.

Virtual Reality enhances soulful learning – and thus (at least in theory) opens the gateway for totally new methods of teaching and learning.  I spoke about this topic at the Romanian International Conference on Research and Education in Iasi in Oktober 2017 – you can watch my keynote here.

GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG – European Education for Teens

What if we were to press the reset button and restart from scratch? What world would we build? What would it look like? What rules would it obey to? And what would be our own role to play in it? In Götterdämmerung, 60 teens from five countries explored ideas and narratives for a brave new world – and put them directly into practice: with wood, steel, paper and masks they built a big scale landscape for us to live in and filled it with questions for us to think about. Did we find answers? Not really. Instead we stick to Rilke: "Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer". Thank you, Rilke. We sure hope so.

INSIGHT THE BLACKBOX: EMOTIONAL EDUCATION FOR TEENS

How do we human beings function? What does our interior network look like? How do we relate to one another? Is there something bigger than ourselves? "Insight The Blackbox"  sheds light on the most fundamental questions of human existence and turns them into art. UV-Paintings, Tape Art, Light Installations, digital Storytelling – together with 18 young adults we built an enormous black box and slowly filled it with life. The result: an exhibition of our most intimate Selfs. Connections. Light in the darkness. And the profound experience that in the end we are one. I am you. You are me. And the more we show of ourselves, the more beautiful it gets.

360° of Empathy: Virtual Reality and Emotional Education

360° of Empathy is an Innovation Hub I initiated and designed with fundings of the Robert Bosch foundation in April 2017. Can the technology of VR be used to cultivate compassion? How can we integrate VR into educational settings? How does embodied experience through VR change our capacities to learn? Is transformational learning through VR possible? Those were some of the questions evoked with a group of 12 interdisciplinary thinkers from the fields of psychology, civil society, education, game design, digital storytelling or personal growth. In the course of the project, my dear friend and colleague Georg Boch and I started the platform "360° of empathy" on which we still gather and produce information on the matter. To me, the technology of Virtual Reality is THE thing to explore in educational settings as I am convinced, that well designed VR experiences can actually lead to transformative change. Please visit our website (German only) to read more on the matter if interested.

Rural Future Lab 2017: VISIONS FOR RURAL AFRICA

The future of humankind will be decided in rural areas. In Africa alone, an additional 440 million young people will be pushing into the labour market between now and 2030, most of them in rural areas. A productive and sustainable agro-food sector in rural parts of developing countries will be vital for creating employment and income for young people in the long term and protecting natural resources. Thus, in March 2017, GIZ and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) invited 30 young farmers, entrepreneurs and representatives of NGOs and farmers' associations from Sub-Saharan Africa to develop and formulate their ideas and best practices for a sustainable rural future. I had the honour to accompany their thought process leading directly to the big G20 conference “The Future of the Rural World. Innovation – Youth – Employment”, where they personally presented their work to German Development Minister Gerd Müller.

DEBATE-DEHATE: training of trainers (2016/17)

Hate speech, as defined by the Council of Europe, covers all forms of expression which spread, incite, promote or justify racial hatred, xenophobia, anti-semitism or other forms of hatred based on intolerance, including: intolerance expressed by aggressive nationalism and ethnocentrism, discrimination and hostility against minorities, migrants and people of immigrant origin. The training of trainers that the foundation "Amadeu Antonio Stiftung" proposes aims at reducing the levels of acceptance of hate speech, increasing own responsibilities and developing alternative communicational strategies which can be shared among peers.

the future of libraries

OCLC is a global library cooperative that supports thousands of libraries in making information more accessible and more useful to people around the world. One of the most pressing topics in 2016 was the question of how to attract the "Selfie Generation" given that a book has almost become an antique object for young adults nowadays...

TEENAGE INTERNETWORK CONVENTION 2016

TINCON stands for Teenage Internetwork Convention and was founded by Tanja and Johnny Haeusler in 2016, who also co-founded one of the worlds leading conferences on digital matters re:publica. TINCON is a 3-day-festival on digital youth culture for young people aged between 13 and 21 – and only for them: adults are simply not allowed to enter the gates. TINCON is about hacking, coding, YouTube, fashion, politics or digital entrepreneurship with the aim to celebrate the young for their ideas and creating network opportunities among them. I assisted the team in the area of strategy and content development for the first edition of the festival that took place in Haus der Berliner Festspiele in may 2016.

How to: game barrier-free

What is it like if you cannot see? What is it like if you cannot hear? And how can we put these experiences into a game-app? 10 teenagers, 4 days and a couple of experts later, a genius prototype for a barrier-free game app was born. The workshop was held in March 2016.
